Bring Your Own Item for Custom Laser Engraving

Ratchet Arts Designs offers bring your own item laser engraving for customers throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond. Whether you have a tumbler, a leather wallet, a piece of wood, or something more personal, this service exists for customers who want personalized engraving on your item — not a product we sold you. Not every item can be laser engraved safely, and every material responds differently. Before anything is engraved, RAD evaluates each piece individually and will be upfront if it is not a good candidate. Your item is handled with care from the moment it arrives until the moment it is returned.

Choose Your Path

Three ways to get your item engraved. Pick the one that fits your situation.

Option 1 — Purchase a Product From Us

If you want to eliminate materials uncertainty entirely, the simplest path is to purchase a laser ready product directly from RAD's store. We engrave it ourselves using materials we know and trust. There is no guesswork about how the item will respond, no materials test required, and no question about whether the finish is compatible with the laser.

A design fee applies and will be included in your quote.

Option 2 — Bring Your Own Standard Item

This is customer supplied item engraving. You bring or ship us an item you already own and we engrave it to your specification. We regularly work with standard drinkware, wood pieces, leather goods, acrylic, glass, and coated metals under this option.

Because every material reacts differently to laser settings, a materials test is required before we touch your item. You have two ways to handle this:

  • RAD sources the test material — A materials test fee applies and we obtain a comparable sample to run test passes on before engraving your piece.

  • You supply a duplicate test item — If you can provide a second identical or comparable item for us to test on, no materials test fee is charged. The test item will not be returned as it is consumed in the process.

Once the test is approved, engraving proceeds.

Option 3 — Rare or One-of-a-Kind Items

Some items cannot be replaced. Heirlooms, vintage pieces, rare collectibles, items with sentimental value that cannot be quantified. RAD takes these projects on selectively.

We are not going to make promises about outcomes we cannot guarantee. What we will do is have an honest conversation about the risks involved, take additional time with every step, and decline the project if we believe the risk to your item is too high. We would rather turn down a job than damage something irreplaceable.

If we agree to proceed, a signed liability waiver is required. This is not a formality, it reflects the reality that laser engraving irreplaceable items carries inherent risk that no amount of care can eliminate entirely. Every rare item project is quoted individually.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials can you engrave?

RAD regularly engraves wood, leather, glass, coated metals, acrylic, and standard drinkware including tumblers and insulated cups. If you are unsure whether your item is compatible, send us photos and as much detail as you know about the material, manufacturer / brand, coating, finish. We will assess it before you bring or ship anything.

Do you engrave items you did not sell?

Yes. That is exactly what this service is for. Bring your own item engraving in DFW and for customers shipping from outside the area is a core part of what RAD offers.

Why is a materials test required?

Laser settings that work perfectly on one tumbler brand may scorch, discolor, or damage a different one. A materials test lets us dial in the correct settings on a sample piece before we touch yours. It does not eliminate all risk but it significantly reduces it and gives us the best chance of a clean result.

What materials will RAD not engrave?

We will not engrave stainless steel, raw or bare metal, PVC, vinyl, ABS plastic, polycarbonate, fiberglass, coated carbon fiber, or any material that requires a fiber laser or produces toxic fumes. Our laser is a CO2 RF system. If your item falls into one of these categories we will contact you before any work begins and no fee will be charged.

What if my item is damaged?

For standard items the materials test process is specifically designed to reduce this risk. For rare and one-of-a-kind pieces a signed liability waiver is required and an honest discussion about risk happens before we proceed. RAD takes every available precaution. If we have serious concerns about a piece we will say so upfront and if the risk is too high we will decline the job rather than gamble with your property.

How long does it take?

Most standard projects are completed within 5 to 7 business days after materials and artwork are approved. Complex projects, rare items, or high volume orders may take longer. If you have a specific completion date in mind include it in your inquiry and we will let you know whether it is achievable.
